Tourney: June 2nd 2011 Caesars Palace Megastack Event #7: $240

I ended up late registering for this tournament. I originally wasnt planning on playing it but decided to at the last minute. There were 284 players today, paying 27 spots and first place paying approximately $11k. By the time I got to the table, the blinds were already an inflated 200-400 but we started with 20000 in chips and the blinds are always a little pumped up in caesars tournaments becuase the starting stacks are so high (antes dont even start until 600-1200).

Level 4: 200-400. My table started off extremely aggressive. I sat back for the first level. I played one hand when I made it 950 with AJo from MP, got 3 calls, and folded a 664T board. I took 18250 to the next level.

Level 5: 300-600. A MP raiser made it 1200 and I called immediately behind him with 66. The button called as well and we checked to the turn of J982 where I folded to a bet from the guy on the button. I made it 1400 from MP with ATo and everyone folded. That was it for this level and I took 17100 to the next.

Level 6: 400-800. At this level, I moved to a new table. The kid at my previous table that was at my immediate right was moved 2 to my right at this table and this factors into this hand. He opened to 1600 UTG +2 and the guy behind him called. I was next and I figured that since I hadnt 3-bet him AT ALL the previous 2 levels, if I did it here at a new table I would get a ton of credit from him. I figured the guy behind him was calling with whatever and it was a nice place to show some aggression. I made it 5100 with 86dd, everyone folded to the raiser and he immediately folded but the caller called the 5100. The flop came down Q76, he checked, and I checked behind. The turn came another 6, giving me trips. He lead out for 6700, I moved all in for my last 10900 (only 4200 more) and after a little thought, he called showing AJo drawing dead. I was up to 34600 and we went to the next level after this nice double.

Level 7: 500-1000. I made it 2300 from the hijack with 87o and the cutoff, who was a nitty old man, was the only caller. The flop came QT8 I checked and he checked behind. The turn came a 4, I bet 3000, he made it 7000, and I called. I called for 2 reasons: 1)his raise size was really small and 2)the guy played pretty straight forward so I thought if he hit anything on the flop he would have bet it when I checked it to him. The river came a 5, I checked, and he instantly went all in for 13200. I could not imagine him having a hand like 67 here and I stuck to my guns that he always bets the flop when checked to him if he hits it (plus the insta-allin looked semi-weak) so I made the hero call with 3rd pair no kicker and it was good when he showed AJ for the missed double gutter. I was up to around 57k after this. I found 55 in MP and made it 2300 and everyone folded. I made it 2300 in MP with Q9o but folded when the cutoff 3-bet to 5500. The blinds went up and I had 54100.

Level 8: 600-1200 100. A MP raiser made it 2500, I called in the cutoff with 22 and the SB called as well. We checked to the turn on J986 and I folded to a bet from the SB. I made it 2600 UTG +2 with T9hh and everyone folded. I limped UTG +1 (yes I open limped, first time in ages) with 33 and the blinds were the only other players. I folded to a bet on the turn on a QT52 board. I made it 2600 from the cutoff with J8o and everyone folded. I then played a kind of funny hand. The player to my right was playing so straight up, he might as well been playing his cards face up. He opened to 2500 UTG +2 and this was such a small opening raise for him, it was easy for me to see he didnt have that much of a hand (the times he showed down monsters, he opened 4x or greater so this is obviously no strength). I found T3o right behind him and made it 6300. However, the button decided this would be a good time to stick his last 7000 in as well. The UTG +2 raiser, now with protection from the all in, was able to call the all in and I called as well. We checked down a board of 98734 and my T3 was no good when the button (all in) showed A9 and the raiser showed T9 (see. . .no hand). I made it 2600 with A8o and the SB was the only caller. The flop came Q85 and we both checked. The turn came a 2 and he check folded to my 3100 bet. I was at 51600 and we went to the next level.

Level 9: 800-1600 200. I made it 3500 with J2o in the cutoff but folded when the SB made it 11k. I was then able to take down a couple of nice sized pots with less than premium hands. I made it 3500 UTG with 88 and got a call from MP and from the BB. The flop came 932, the BB checked, I bet 5600, the MP caller called, and the BB folded. The turn came a T, I checked, he bet 10k and I in no way could think of a hand he would call the flop, bet the turn, and was a combination of beating my hand (if he has a hand with a 9 its doubtful he bets the turn) and/or being able to call a shove (even if he is betting a 9 a call here is impossible unless its T9) so I pushed in for my last 32k here. He thought for a little while and ended up folding (what Im almost positive was 55-77). A super loose guy who loved to see flops made it 4500 in EP and I made it 11.6k in MP with 69cc. He called and the flop came AQ8. He checked, I bet 12k, and he thought for about 3-4 minutes before folding. I made it 3500 from the button with AK but the blinds folded. I was up to 88000 and we went to the next level.

Level 10: 1000-2000 300. I have no hands recorded for this level. I blinded down to 83600.

Level 11: 1500-3000 400. This is really when push came to shove of the tournament. The average stack was getting smaller and smaller in relation to the blinds and there were a ton of all ins. Luckily for me, I was able to ship a massive pot early on in the level. I was probably 2nd (maybe 3rd. . .it was close) in chips on my table with my ~83k stack and I opened to 6500 UTG +1 with TT. The SB, who was far and away the chip leader of the table (and maybe even the tournament) 3-bet me 14500. He was competent and active but always seemed to have a good hand at showdown and his 3-bet size was very small compared to his normal 3-bet size. The size actually scared me so I just called here. The flop came down K42 he lead out for just 8k (another dangerously small bet) and I just called. The turn came the glorious T making me a set. He lead out for 22k and I just smooth called. The river came a 5, he put me all in for my last ~50k and I instacalled tabling my set. He showed AK which was no good and I doubled up in a massive pot. I was up to 180k or so and was probably chip leader of the tournament (or close to it). I made it 6500 from the hijack with Q4ss and everyone folded. I made it 6500 from MP with 33 and the BB (the cally guy from before) called. The flop came 965 and we checked. The turn came a K, he checked, I bet 8100, and he folded. I was all the way up to 196700 and we went to the next level.

Level 12: 2000-4000 400. It folded to the SB and he shoved about 45k into my BB. I called with 66, he showed ATo and the board ran out K7457 giving me the flip. I made it 9500 with KTdd, the SB made it 24k, and I folded. We went to dinner break with me having 228500 (avg 120k).

Level 13: 3000-6000 500. There were only about 45 players remaining at this point so I thought it was a good time to start applying some prebubble pressure. However, I did this in a weird way. Instead of being overly aggressive preflop and have people jam on me nonstop, I decided to start flatting raises in position in order to take pots away on the flop and turn. An overly active player UTG +1 made it 14.5k and I flatted in the cutoff with 62o. The flop came 886 and we both checked. The turn came a T, he checked, I bet 15k, and he folded. An EP player made it 15k, I called in MP with KQo, and the BB called as well. The flop came 763, they checked to me, I bet 26k, and they both folded. I made it 13.5k from MP with Q7o and the BB called. The flop came J95 and donk jammed ~50k into me and I had to fold. I was up to 263500 and we went to the next level.

Level 14: 4000-8000 500. I made it 17.5k with 54hh UTG but had to fold when the button and then the BB went all in. An EP raiser made it 17k, the SB called, and I was in the BB and found 77. I went all in (effective stacks ~120k and ~160k) and they both folded. The cutoff made it 21k and I called from the button with K5ss. The flop came A63, he bet 22k and I floated with a call. The turn came a T, he checked, I bet 45k, and he folded after some thought. I made it 17.5k from MP with QJo and everyone folded. The button made it 19k and I went all in from the SB with 99 (effective stack BB~100k and button ~160k) and everyone folded. The overly active player made it 17.5k in EP, an active MP player made it 45k, and I found KK in the hijack directly behind the 3-bettor (same guy who I put all in with 77 and 99). I tinkered with just flatting but I had already reraised him enough so I thought if I did it again he might get fed up and stack off. I made it 105k and they both folded. I was up to 449500 and we went to the next level.

Level 15: 5000-10000 1000. This level started directly on the bubble. I had about 450k and the average stack was 200k or so. I made it 22.5k from the cutoff but folded when the SB made it 70k. I made it 22.5k in MP with T3cc and the BB went all in for about 50k. I called, he showed QQ, and the board ran out JJ978 making me a straight and bursting the bubble. The cutoff, who was the other big stack at the table, made it 31k, the button called, I 3-bet to 85k from the SB with A8o and they both folded. We went to the next level with me having 554500.

Level 16: 6000-12000 1000. We early in this level, we redrew for the final 2 tables. Unfortunately for me, I found the chip leader (who I hadnt played with to this point) to my left. He had about 800k to my 550k. This was a bad draw for me and this draw marked the start of the downfall of my tournament (although I can only really blame myself). An EP raiser made it 26k and I called from the button with T9ss. The flop came KJ5 1 spade, he lead out for 38k, and I called. The turn came a 9, he went all in for about 150k and I had to fold. I then played 2 pots with the chip leader where I learned a valuble lesson: dont f*** with the chip leader. He made it 25k UTG and I decided to play a pot with him from the BB and called him with Q9o. The flop came 842 2 spades, I checked, he bet 22k, I made it 62k, he 3-bet to 110k, and I had to fold. Oops. Very next hand, I completed the SB into his BB with K3hh and he checked. The flop came QJ3 2 diamonds, I checked, he bet 20k, and I called. The turn came the Ad, completing a potential flush and straight. I checked and he checked behind. The river came a 5 and I thought a bet repping the flush/straight/ace might get him off a J or Q with which he would bet the flop. I fired 60k but he instantly called showing QJ for a hand hes never folding. Ugh. . .just like that I had dusted off almost half my stack. I had 296k and we went to the next level.

Level 17: 8000-16000 2000. I made it 35k UTG with 99 and everyone folded. An EP raiser made it 36k and I shoved for about 330k from the button with KQdd and everyone folded. I was back up to over 400k again. I completed the SB into the Cls BB with 84o and he checked. The flop came K73 and we both checked. The turn came a 6 I bet 20k and he called. The river came an A, I thought about bluffing again but he had me spooked from the previous hands so I jsut checked and my 8 high was no good when he showed 43. I made it 35k in the hijack with KJo, the chip leader called in the cutoff, the button called, and the SB jammed for 206k and I folded. I was at 345k and we went to the next level.

Level 18: 10000-20000 2000. I was in the cutoff and made it 44k with 85o into 2 weak tight players blinds. However, the SB decided to go all in for about 250k and I had to fold. A couple of hands later, we were 7 handed and I was UTG and found 44 and jammed for my last ~280k. It folded to the BB and he called with AQo and we were off to the races. The board ran out T95T9 for the runner runner counterfit of my pair and a bad bust out on my part.

I finished in 13th place for $830 or so but its super super frustrating to get this deep with a stack and fail. Ughhhh. I tried to dance with the chip leader several times but failed to get the better of him. He wasnt actually a good player but he had the cards and heart to crush my soul. Next time I will try not to get into a game of chicken with the chip leader. Like I said before, it is really disheartening and frustrating to play all day and not make anything of it. Until I am able to get deep again, I will continue to work and grind as hard as I can until I get the result I am striving for.
