Tourney: June 15th 2011 The Grand Poker Series Event #24: $225 8-Game Mix

For todays event, I decided to try something a little new with an 8-game mix tournament. For those of you who are not familiar with the concept, we rotate between 8 games (every 20 minutes we play a different game). The games are as follows (in order of them being played): 2-7 limit triple draw, limit hold'em, limit O8, Razz, Stud, Stud-8, NLHE, PLO. We started with 12000 in chips and there were 110 players in this event. Unfortunately, my table was possibly the toughest in the room with 4 really solid and difficult mixed game players (and we only played 6 handed). Becuase this was a mix game I didnt really record any hands as most of the games are limit and this leads to many small pots with lots of betting rounds that are difficult to remember and record. I will do my best to recount some key hands of the tournament though.

I actually late regged and missed the first 20 minutes (and the 1st 2-7 TD level) which was fine by me. In the ensueing limit holdem round, I won a decent pot where I flopped top pair with J5, turned a flush draw and got 3-bets with the guy, and got a value bet on the river. I was up to around 13k after this game. I maintained around this amount during the O8 level, but lost some back in smaller pots in the razz and stud rounds. I was at 12k or so and we went to Stud-8. I lost a pretty large pot in this game when I started with split As and hit aces and tens on 5th street but ended up getting squeezed by a guy who made trip 7s on 4th (and quads on 7th) and a guy who had a made low by 5th. I was down to about 10.6k or so and we went on our 1st break.

The no limit round played pretty small because everyone at the table played extremely competent. I didnt really play too many significant pots. . .I opened to 350 (at 75-150) with 86cc but folded to a 3-bet. I opened to 350 with AJo, got 3 callers, bet 550 on the AK8 flop, and everyone folded. I was up to 11.5k or so after this level and we went to PLO. Unfortunately for me, the PLO round is where everything started to go wrong. I lost 2 big pots. The first I opened AKJ5 (with A suited) to 400 (75-150 still) and got 2 callers. The flop came J53 all diamonds and I bet out 625 and got 1 caller. The turn came a Q, I checked, he bet 1600, and I called. The river came a 9, I checked, he potted (about 5k or so) and I folded. The next, the button opened to 400 and I 3-bet from the BB to 1125 with AKJ9 DS. He called and the flop came KT7 2 hearts (I didnt have a heart). I lead out for 1650 but had to fold when he potted it (which would have essentially put me all in). I was down to 6k or so after this. After this we were back to 2-7 TD playing 100-200 blinds (200-400 limits). I lost 2 significant pots in this game also. One of these I made a pat 87 on the 2nd draw and called down a guy who made a pat 86 on the same draw. The next I drew to the river where I made 86432 and called down a guy who patted after the 1st draw, bet the whole way, and showed 85432. I was down to 5k or so after this game. Next came the limit holdem round (100-200/200-400) where I lost probably my largest and most significant pot of the day. A guy opened UTG and I found 33 on the button and flatted. The blinds came along as well and the flop came AQT. The raiser lead out, I decided to take 1 street off and called with my small pair, and the blinds folded. The turn came a 3 giving me a set of 3s. He lead out and we ended up raising each other until he put the 5th bet in and I called (after he put the 5th bet in I was pretty sure I was beat but I have to call still). The river came a 5, he bet and I made a crying call but lost when he showed KJ for the flopped nuts. I was down to around just 2000 or so after this game. However, the next razz round ended up positive for me. The limits were 50/150/400-800. First hand, I made it to 7th street in a hand where I was drawing at the wheel with J532A but ended up pairing. Luckily, he was also drawing at a low and I won when he showed J542A (I was drawing at a better one). I got into another hand in with the same guy where I made a 7 low on 6th with 7632A, I checked, he bet, I raised, and he 3-bet and I just called. I check/called the river and he showed a worse 7 low and I took in another nice pot. I was up to 8000 or so after this but lost some back where I started with a mammoth 6325 but ended up hitting K6K and folding to a bet on 7th. I was at 6500 and we went to the 2nd break.

The blinds were increasing rapidly and I was going to have to make a hand or 2 to get back into the game. The game was stud with 100/200/400-800 limits. I made my only grave mistake of the day when I ended up paying a guy off on 5th, 6th, and 7th when it was obviously I was beat. I started with 883 (hidden 8s) and completed, getting 1 caller. 4th I made 2 pair with another 3 and he called. On 5th he paired 10s and bet out. I know that he is not calling my bets without strong hands so I should have gave him credit for a higher 2 pair or a set but I failed to think when I paid off his bets on the next 2 streets and lost when he showed tens, queens, and rivered kings for good measure. I was down to 3000 or so and we went to stud-8. I was able to get a double up when I started with split kings (K9K), hit a 9 on 4th to make 2 pair, bet every street to 7th, and get him to fold when I went all in for my last 500 on 7th. I took about 5500 to the no limit round and the blinds were an astonishing 300-600 100. This is a major mistake by the people who made the tournament structure as these big bet rounds would play 4-times as big as the limit rounds. The blinds should be significantly scaled back to compensate for the fact that you will be winning and losing more in these rounds than in the limit rounds. In any case, I only had 9 bbs to start off the round with. I folded through my blinds dropping me to 4400, and a player in MP made it 1500. I found A2ss on the button and reshipped on his raise but the SB went all in over the top. The raiser folded and the SB showed AQo. I missed my 3-outer and was busted out (in the no limit round of all levels). I kind of regret this play here and wish I would have waited for PLO to start jamming my chips around. Oh well.

The 8-game mix was an interesting experience for me. I felt like I was kind of overmatched, especially in stud and to a lesser degree stud-8 but I think I played pretty well overall. If those 2 hands in the PLO part go a different way then I am probably able to last quite a bit longer in the tournament but as it is, I made a pretty early exit. I would absolutely play another 8-game tournament. I had fun and learned alot about some different games from some good players I just wish I could have done better. Tomorrow I am back at the Venetian playing in a deepstack $340 so hopefully I can get back on the bike and ride it to day 2.
