Tourney: Venetian April 7th $340 2009 Venetian Deepstack Extravaganza II Event #6 recap

I went in to todays deepstack with a different approach than the previous ones. Instead of letting the tournament come to me, I was going to attack it. I was planning on raising a ton of pots early on to give myself an extreme LAGgy image but stay cautious and make sure that I get paid when I hit my hands. At the same time, though, I would be smart with my chips and only get too aggressive when I have over my starting stack.

I sat down and we started out 6 handed and I probably started opening 3-4 pots/orbit early on in the tournament. I would probably win about ½ with c-bets and lose the other half either by check folding or c-betting and getting called and checking down (I was playing too many hands to write down the specifics). Even so, if I win about ½ the pots I open, I should still be steadily increasing my stack. I was up to about 13k or so early and my table started to fill up.

A guy sat down on my right and I didn’t recognize him but he had a WSOP bracelet on (after some research tonight, Im about 90% certain that it was this guy named Duncan Bell but I cant really be for sure) and he started to make things hard on me. He started opening every single pot that was folded to him. I swear that he opened like 95% of the possible pots he could. It was hard for me to maintain my image with him raising so many pots, but I raised pretty much every pot he didn’t, regardless of my cards. One of these pots, I opened to 125 UTG with 98o and got 4 callers, including Duncan from the BB. The flop came out 875 and I bet out 525 and one guy called behind and so did Duncan. The turn came a 2 and we checked around. The river came a J and Duncan bet out 800 and I called and he showed JT and I was down to 11.5k.

It folded to Duncan on the button and he made it 200 to go and I was in the SB and found KK and made it 750. He called and the flop came A86 and I checked and he checked. The turn came a Q and it went check-check again. The river came a 6 and I checked, he bet 1500 and I called instantly and he showed QJ and I was up to 13.5k or so.

After the madness at the first level, we went to level 2 (50-100) and much of the same continued (although I had to slow down considerably because of Duncan and the fact that all my raises were starting to get called in multiple pots). I did still open a lot but not nearly as much. I called one of Duncans raises to 300 with 99 and so did about 5 other people and the flop came AT2 and I check/folded. After this hand, I was down to 12.6k. Soon after this hand, this English guy came and took an empty seat right on Duncans right and he was equally as aggressive as Duncan was! After he sat down, I considerably tightened and waited for a hand. The English guy made it 325 to go in MP and I found AA in the cutoff and made it 1050. It folded to him and he called and the flop came AT8 2 diamonds and he checked and I bet out 1500 and he folded. Bummer. .. no action for my big hands.

I folded for a while and close to the end of the level, Duncan made it 300 to go and I reraised to 1050 with AQo in MP. He called and the flop came TT2 and he checked and I checked behind. The turn came a K and he checked and I bet 1500 and he folded.

I was up to 14.5k or so and we went to level 3 (100-200). I found a spot to open UTG +1 after Duncan finally folded. I raised to 475 with 92o and got 2 callers. The flop came K53 and I c-bet and they both folded. Next hand I found 86hh UTG and made it 475 again and got called in 1 spot. The flop came QTT and I c-bet and he called and I check/folded the 7 turn. I called a raise to 525 with 44 and 4 other callers and folded when I didn’t make my set. I raised to 475 in EP with 97o and got 3 callers and check folded the flop of K33. After this hand I was down to 13.1k or so (I tried to get something going but no dice). Shortly before the break, Duncan busted out giving me a little more freedom but I still had that English guy to my right to worry about. The level ended and I had 12875 chips at the 1st break.

We came back to level 4 (100-200 25) and I tried to get my aggressive image back. I raised in EP 2 consecutive hands to 550 with K4 and J7 and had to fold to reraises. I then raised in EP with a limper UTG to 625 with 65ss and got 2 callers. The flop came 962 and I bet 800 and one of the callers raised to 2k and I ended up folding after much debate. I then raised with 65hh UTG and got 5 callers and check/folded a flop of A98. I was able to take a pot with Q7o when I raised in EP and c-bet the flop of 866.

I was down to around 11.2k after all these hands and we went up to 200-400 25 (level 5). The English guy to my right had still been opening a TON of pots and I had it in my mind that I was going to reraise him sooner or later, with or without a hand. About 10 minutes into the level, he made it 1025 from the cutoff and I found AQdd from the button (I was probably reraising ATC here but I found a good hand) I had about 10.5k left and I made it 2575. He decided to call and the flop came 964 all clubs. He checked and I checked behind. The turn came Qs and he lead out for 2000 and I pushed all in for my last 8000 or so and he instacalled and showed 32cc and I was drawing dead and out of the tournament.

If I could just take a minute to talk about this hand. I think that I made the right play preflop. Reraising a very aggressive player from the button is the right play. I could have chosen to trap and just call and if I make a hand on the flop, slow play and try to double through him. However, I raised and he called. He had been calling reraises very often, which lead me to assume that he was calling them lightly. I thought it was weird that he called though because he probably had 40k or so in chips and calling a raise from my 10k stack gave him no implied odds. The flop was not good for me. I know that he probably isn’t folding a pair or a draw and that if he is calling my raises lightly, he very well may have a 87, 98, 68 hand like that and has a hand that he will either c/r me all in or call my bet. I decide to check behind. The turn comes Qs giving me top pair top kicker. He bets out 2k. I think he could do this with any cards. This could be a bluff a Q with a weaker kicker, any pair, or a flush. I do not necessarily know at this point. I decide to push all in and he calls and shows the flush. First of all, it sucks that he made what I think to be a terrible call PF. He has no implied odds and even if he does make a hand, how good does it have to be for him to get my chips? Anyways, my fatal flaw in the hand was pushing all in on the turn. I know that I could be drawing dead (which I was) when I do this and I know that there is no hand that he will call with here that I am a favorite. Instead, I should have just called his 2k bet, saw the river, and went from there. If he pushes or makes a big bet on the river, I can easily fold here with AQ. Overall, I made a losing play by pushing all in on the turn here and I could have saved chips by just calling the turn and playing the river.

I finished earlier than the other deepstacks in about 200th place or so (I don’t even know--really early). Hopefully I will have a much better showing tomorrow.
