Well this was the big one. I essentially came to Vegas for these tournaments and they finally started today. We started with 12000 in chips and the blind levels were 40 minutes long. Today, there were 276 players and the first prize was right around 28k.
First hand of the tournament, I was in the BB with 4 limpers and I found 42o. The flop came 432 giving me 2 pair. I bet out 200 and one limper raised to 900 and the next limper made it 2400. This was an extremely confusing start to the tournament. I obviously folded and Im sure theres no way Im good here. I dropped to 11k after calling a raise and a reraise to 500 with 44 and not spiking a set but I won some back by raising with 33 and A9 and taking the blinds or c-betting the flop. I finished the first level at 11550 and we went to level 2 (50-100).
I found AA in the small blind when it folded around to me and I made it 250 and the BB called. The flop came 864 and I bet out 300, she raised to 800 and I called. The turn came a 9 and I checked and she checked behind. The river came another 6 and it went check-check and she showed K8 and my AA was good (although I probably missed value). I raised in LP with A9o and both the blinds and one limper called. The flop was 443 and it checked to me and I bet 1000. I got called and the turn came a 10 and he bet and I folded and I was down to 11.2k. I then found AJ in back to back hands, raised and folded when I missed the flop and was down to 10.5k. Later, there were a bunch of limpers and the guy in the cutoff made it 500. I found AKo on the button and popped it to 1750 and everyone folded. I then called 400 with position and 3 other players in the hand with KTdd but folded when I missed the flop. After this level, I was down to 10400 and we went to level 3 (100-200).
I raised in LP with one limper with A9o and got called by the BB and the limper. The flop came K95 and it checked to me and I checked behind. The turn came a J and the limper bet 500 and I called. The river came a 2 and I called his 500 bet again and he showed KQ and I was down to 8500. I dwindled to about 7k without picking up a pot until the last hand of the level. There were 4 limpers to me in the cutoff and I found KQss. I made it 1200 to go, just trying to take their limps. However, the BB had other ideas and pushed in for around 4000 total. They all folded and it was back to me. I only had to call 2800 more and I knew it was the last hand before the break and he was short stacked and he seemed like a degenerate gambler who would just want to push here to avoid waiting the break with a short stack. On the other hand, he knew I was playing tight and I would think that he wouldn’t push on my big raise without a hand. I settled that even if this was the case, there was a high probability that his hand was a pair that was lower than my cards and we were racing so I settled on a call. Unluckily for me, he rolled over AKo and I was a big dog. The board came out J43Q5 and hit my 3 outer (he wasn’t very happy with me). Thanks to this, I went to the 1st break with 12400 (400 more than I started with).
We came back to level 4 (100-200 25) and my first BB, I found J6 with 3 limpers +SB. The flop came T66 and I checked and one of the limpers bet out 900. I raised it to 2500 and everyone folded and I was up to 14.5k. I then picked up JT in one of my SBs with 2 limpers and the flop came Q98. I bet out 500 and everyone folded (flop the nuts no action—story of the trip). I was over 15k after this and I ended this level with 15325.
The blinds went to level 5 (200-400 25). In mid position, I found AQhh with one limper in front of me. I made it 1250 and it folded to the BB who made it 3850 total. I decided to fold and was down to 14.5k. I remained very active preflop though, stealing the blinds 3 times in one round with KJhh, KTo, and A9o and raising preflop again with AJo but folding to a reraise. I was in the BB with one limper and found T5o. We checked down a board of KJ4QA and I bet 625 on the river and the limper called me and my str was good. I was up to 16.5k and the level ended with me at 16250.
The blinds went to 300-600 50 at level 6. I found QQ and raised to 1550 in MP and the SB called. We checked down a board of AJ5AJ and I bet 2000 on the river and he folded. The only other hand I played this level was limping with 22 and folding when I didn’t make my set. We were at the 2nd break and I finished at 15375.
We came back and level 7 was 400-800 75. About halfway through the level, I raised with KTo from the button. The SB, who was a tighter lady with a lot of chips, called and the flop came JT6. She checked and I decided to check behind solely for pot control this time. The turn came an 8 and she bet out 5k. With the size of the bet combined with the fact that she didn’t really bet unless she had a hand, I should know that I am beat here but when you raise PF and check behind when you hit the flop, you always think that theres a chance youre good here (but in this spot I never ever am). Anyways, I called the 5k and right after I called, she picked up enough chips to put me all in with her hand. The river came off an A and before she even hardly looked at the card, she put me all in. I am obviously no good here because of the way she played this hand so I folded and she shows me TT for a flopped set. Its sick that she hit that because she respected my game and if the flop would have had any over and I bet, she probably would have just folded. Anyways, after this hand I found myself severely short stacked with 6800 in chips or so. I was able to steal a couple times, once with ATcc and once with KK (which I really wanted a call but didn’t get one) but the blinds were coming around about as fast as I could steal. Eventually, this looser player made it 2100 in the cutoff in a way that made me think “if I have anything at all here, Im pushing”. I found A8dd and pushed my last 7k or so and he ended up calling with 66 and I lost the race and was eliminated from the tournament.
There were 12 tables left when I got out so my guesstimate would be that I finished around 115/276. Not really the greatest showing but if I can just pick up a few hands, Ill be ready to make a deep run.
