Going into this tourney, I knew that it would be kind of a crapshoot. It was, the blinds structure wasn’t very good and I was going to have to gamble. There were about 45 entrants (they usually only have 25-30 or so so that was kind of weak) and first place was just over 2k. Sean and I did a 20% swap on the tournament so we would be able to benefit from each other. This tournament was extremely odd for me. There were a lot of weird hands that played themselves out and one absurd thing that happened to me that has never happened to me (or anyone else for that matter) in a tournament.
At my table, I found a bunch of people that I recognized including the Lebanese guy. We started with 4000 in chips and the levels were 20 minutes long. Level one was 25-50. The 3rd hand of the tournament, I was in the SB with a bunch of limpers. I found AKo and decided not to raise because I knew I would get called in every spot possible, so I just completed. However, the BB, who was this weird asian guy who Id never actually seen around decided to make it 300 more. The Lebanese guy called and I thought that this was a perfect spot for me to take their chips since they obviously had nothing, so I made it 1500. The BB thought for a really long time before folding and the Lebanese guy instantly moved all in. I instantly called and he showed QQ and I won the race on a K high board. However, during this hand a weird thing happened. The flop came K32 and the asian guy in the BB went absolutely nuts, slamming the table and yelling and everything saying he knew he should have called and he hated poker and everything.
I was up to 8k or so and before I could even count my chips, the action was on me on the button. There were 3 limpers and I found AKdd and made it 225. The asian guy was still talking really loudly and he said he didn’t care anymore and hated poker and slammed all of his chips in the middle and everyone folded and I called (im not even sure if he looked at his cards before he did this) and he showed 55 and I lost this race and was down to 4500 or so.
A couple minutes later I raised in EP with J3cc to 125 and the BB miniraised me to 250 and I called. The flop came Q74 with 2 clubs and he bet out 300, I raised to 825, and he pushed all in and I folded and he showed AQ. I was back down to 3800 or so and it was a crazy first 10 minutes of the tournament.
After this my table broke and the absurd thing happened. When my table broke, the tournament director passed out the seat cards but I didn’t get a seat card. I was like “Where do I go?” and the tournament director searches frantically for a seat. There is no open seat in the tournament. At this point, I just tell him Ill wait for someone to bust and he says that he does not want me to do that so he will get me a seat. After he says this, one of his dealers has an emergency and he has to go tend to that issue and he is gone for literally 10 minutes before he comes back. I am just sitting there, at the empty broken table by myself, with my chips while still in the tournament. SO weird. Anyways, he finally comes back and no one is busted yet so I tell him again Ill wait and he says that hell get me in (we walk around for 5 minutes while he “isn’t waiting for someone to bust” apparently. . .while we are walking we see a short stack double with 86 vs KQ aipf LOL) Eventually, he squeezes me in on a table as an 11th seat about 18 minutes after my table broke. That is just so bizarre.
They were at level 2 when I came in (about 10 minutes into it) and I folded my 1st 2 hands and I was in the BB the next hand and this super aggro euro guy that I had played with before multiple times (SUPER aggro) raised it to 275 in EP. I found AKo in the BB and meant to make it 1000 but grabbed 2 1000 chips instead of 2 500s when I raised it so I made it 2000 instead, he pushed all in, and I called (against him, I am calling here even if I do make it 1000 98% of the time especially with this extreme structure. I am rarely if ever folded AK preflop in a turbo such as this.). Anyways, I call and he shows AA and I lose and bust out.
What an ordeal that tournament was. 2 coinflips in the first 4 hands, an impromptu 18 minute break, and AK all in preflop 3 times in the 15 hands or so that I played. Sean busted about 10 minutes after the 1st break in a race and we didn’t end up cashing. After the tournament, we went back to the Hard Rock to get some more hours there.
